Title : Blue Walrus
- Purpose & Inspiration: This is one of the "Sea World" works series. The purpose of the work was to create a scarf that symbolized the image of the walrus that has the rhythmical textures on the back and wavering movement. The documentary film, "A Marine Kingdom", inspired me, which showed the walrus swinging in a flabby manner along the movement. This scarf can be matched with eveningwear for special occasions.
- Concept & Design Process: With an emphasis on design concept of lively flowing image of the walrus under the sea, the blue color tone and textured textiles were importantly considered. First, the gradational effect of dyeing with blue color tone was done. After finishing dyeing process, the basic scarf piece 10"width ¡¿ 66"length was made by bias cut, and then trimmed with 1/8" tucks following the center part of the scarf. It fully showed the walrus image that involves the fluid, moving and lively characteristics.
- Techniques: For the gradation effects, the craft dyeing technique was applied, from the light blue around center to the dark blue toward the ends of the scarf. To fully reproduce the wavering image of walrus, the techniques of bias cutting and tucking were used. There are total thirty tucks at two-inch intervals and they exist up to 11/2" away from the scarf edge, which is a core of the work. Interlocking finish was used for the edge line.
